When considering plastics recycling of post-consumer waste streams, it is important to realize that most of the plastics contained in these streams are comprised of polyolefins. These include polypropylene (PP), low density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and various copolymers e.g. EVA. The use and exposure of the plastics during lifetime and also mechanical recycling of plastics generally results in degradation of the polymer. This yields a lower quality product with inferior (physical) properties.
